Day 8--Sentosa
Wednesday morning here was our last full day--we fly out around 8:30 Thursday morning. Helen and I joined Robert and the big kids at the beach this morning after breakfast for about 15 minutes. Then we came back and Robert stayed with them another hour.
Today after breakfast we took a taxi to that cheapish (it's all relative--it's not cheap, but lodging here isn't, though hawker centre and mall food certainly was, and it's cheaper than each of the other hotels) pod hotel with bunk beds in Chinatown and drop off our bags.
We had a fancy dim sum in a high-rise building for lunch, then the final wing of the zoo (the River Safari adventure)
This part of the zoo wasn't quite as exciting as the main part, but it had a clearly-defined path which was pleasant to walk along, and a river safari ride where you could look at monkeys, capybara, etc. from a littlt boat.
And of course, it also had pandas--first red pandas:
and then giant pandas!
plus panda statues, and chocolate-filled panda pau (bao).
as well as panda chairs.
Dinner, post pandas, was at the Chinatown hawker centre supper, and we walked around Chinatown a little afterward. It's almost the Year of the Dog, and we appreciated all of the decorations.
Day 9--Chinatown / Narita / Boston
The hotel has shared bathrooms upstairs, but we had a private room with six of these pods and three easy chairs in the room. The kids were of course thrilled! Each pod has a charger and a reading light, and the beds were quite comfortable and we all slept very well.
We had quick and easy flights with a stop in the Singapore first-class lounge (witness the iced gem cookies Robert found there--ubiquitous all over, though I was sorry I hadn't had more of them as they are oddly compelling) and then a nice 2 hour layover in Japan--enough time to use their great bathrooms, do a samurai activity, let the kids play in the play area, and get a sit-down lunch (unadon, beef gyudon, and sushi with miso soup). Then home, landing at 5:30 p.m., and going back to school in the morning tomorrow! It was a fantastic January trip.
