Everyone was warned that there would be a cannon salute at the end of the ceremony. "Be prepared for a very loud bang!" read the appropriate line in the program. The cannon was a fabulous touch, but it somehow still managed to take everyone I talked to by surprise. Here's a quick example of how it played out.
1. "And now, the kiss," Miriam's sister said. Miriam and Davis kissed. My camera clicked.
2. Miriam and Davis pulled apart and her sister announced them as a married couple for the first time. Everyone looked blissfully happy. Still in the same place, just one second after the previous shot, my camera clicked once more.
3. BANG! The cannon fired. No, we were not prepared for the "very loud bang," even though we knew it was coming. I had kept my camera in the same place, ready to snap Miriam and Davis at the moment of the cannon salute. This is the shot I got: the cannon shot off, my arm jerked up, my camera clicked, and all of a sudden Miriam and Davis were walking down the aisle and that was it, they were married. Talk about going out with a bang!
